The How & Why

For as long as Heather and I have known each other, we have thought about working in medical missions. In fact, before we started dating Heather tested me to see my response to her desire to "work as a missionary in Africa for 30 years". Really, she just wanted to know that I was willing to do such a thing if God led us that way.

Although the chance of working outside of Canada has seemed slight at best, we've seen the opportunity of serving in Peru opening up in front of us over the last 2 years. God has supernaturally, naturally led our church leadership into a partnership with Pastor John Bonner in Peru to establish a home for homeless children. It is through that connection that we met John, and first travelled to Peru in February 2006.

We committed to pray about returning, and now have the opportunity to go back for a little bit longer time. During this time we hope to serve in whatever ways we can, including construction on the orphanage and anything around the Bible College that we can. As well, we've been asked to teach an elective, for credit course at the Bible College on medical missions. This is still under development, but we plan to look at Biblical wisdom for health, basic medical knowledge of common illnesses, and some basic medical skills with the goal of helping students reach out to the people of Peru in practical ways.

We are prayerfully considering a longer term trip to Peru. We appreciate your prayers as we seek the Lord on this. Our desire is to say "yes" to His plan for our lives. May we have the courage and wisdom to do that.

Update: On September 30, 2007, we had the opportunity of sharing with our home church, Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel, about our call to Peru. If you would like to listen to that service, click below.
