We were blessed to have the opportunity to travel to Florida to meet with Steve Saint and the others at I-TEC (Indigenous People's Technology and Education Centre). We felt truly welcomed, and very well looked after!
Our days were mostly spent meeting around the boardroom table, trying to figure out how to best enable indigenous believers to serve the medical needs of their severly underserved communities. Evan and I have long felt a desire to teach indigenous people in basic medicine as a way to meet felt needs and empower the indigenous church by giving them a tool to reach out to others in their community. Caring for a person's felt needs is a demonstration of Jesus' love (Matt. 25:40) and a bridge for winning the right to share the gospel. Having first hand experience of what is like to live where there is no medical help, and complete reliance on outsiders, Steve Saint has insights uncommon to most North Americans, and a strong sense of the Lord's direction to help these people without making them dependant on constant outside help. We believe the Lord has brought us together to work towards this common goal. It is a priviledge to partner with I-TEC.
While we were there we also had a chance to tour of the I-TEC building/hanger. Besides the I-TEC technologies, there are also many artifacts from the Waodani tribe and the plane that was flown in The End of the Spear movie. The photo of us with Steve is taken in front of the plane used in the movie. I-TEC also helps to train believers to build self-sustaining industries that strengthen the local church. This airplane was built by indigenous people in the Ecuadorian Rainforest. This enterprise, started with the help of I-TEC, builds planes for interested buyers in the USA. Having a little creativity, a willingness to train and equip indigenous people can truly make a lasting impact.
Come along with us!
This is the chronicle of our journey in faith and service that started in Peru. Explore our previous trip, and keep up to date with what is happening now as we work with ITEC in Florida, and with national believers in South America as well as other parts of the world. We'd love to hear from you - so comment on the postings, or send us an email!
